Brianna January- Spring 2011 (CIEE ALCALÁ- Notre Dame College of Maryland). Mi vida en Alcalá (España),

Brianna

My life in Alcalá (Spain), what a beautiful one it is! Spring 2011.

My name is Brianna January (Notre Dame College of Maryland) and I study in Alcalá de Henares through CIEE´s study abroad program. In the United States I study international relations and Spanish. Here in Alcalá. I study more or less the same thing. I have five classes, ranging from advanced grammar to ¨comparison between the United States and Spain, politically, socially, and economically.¨ I truly like all of my classes. My advanced grammar class, in my humble opinion, has been a unique opportunity that I wouldn´t have been able to have in my American university. To study under native Spanish speakers is an opportunity of a lifetime. In addition, my translation class has helped me a lot with my abilities to write in Spanish. More than anything my classes here and the experiences that they have provided me with, like the daily use of Spanish, are things that I will not forget and that are going to help me a ton when I return to the United Sates!

(Guilford College- Spring 2011).

With our culture professor Fausto Zamora, we saw the artistic diversity in the city: city walls and Roman bridges, Gothic Cathedral, San Isidoro Romanesque Church, Plateresque Hostel San Marcos, Botines’ Modernist style and contemporary in the MUSAC. Though the visit to the winery and the cave are what caught the most interest.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is later than normal this year, and vacation are from April 15th to the 24th. Practically all of the students want to leave Alcalá to explore other cities in Spain and Europe.

But almost all of our students will try “torrijas”, the most famous dessert of Semana Santa with the host families and some of them will watch religious processions.

Alcalá's first "Noche en Blanco" festival

“Noche en Blanco” in Alcalá

Noche en blanco alcala

For several years now, downtown Madrid has held a festival in September called “Noche en Blanco” (The Night in White) with music, art, dance, theater, etc. and it goes on all night long. The majority of the events are free, even the most famous museums in Madrid! It has become a big success in Madrid, and this year, Alcalá chose to start a new tradition with its own “Noche en Blanco”.

Saturday, April 2, 2011 was the chosen day for Alcalá’s first “Noche en Blanco”, and it was a success! We were also very lucky to have nice weather because it’s hard to predict in early April. The activities started off at 5:30 PM and continued until 3 AM! There were dance performances, a Polaroid picture “marathon” of the activities going on during the night, a book fair, parades, a short bike race, movies, literature conferences, a children’s workshop to dress up like Miguel de Cervantes, a train ride tour of the old part of town, several musical performances —from opera to rock to bagpipes in the street—, theatrical performances of some of Spain’s most famous plays, and entertaining story telling, both for kids and adults. It’s safe to say that no one was bored!

Alcalá’s museums were also open to the public and had a variety of expositions, both permanent and temporary, for everyone to enjoy, such as the Comics exposition or the private collection of Cervantes’ works. Many of the convents were open for guided visits, too.

There was even a Flashmob performance in the Cervantes Square, the very center of town.

Since this year’s celebrations were such a hit for both young and old, it’s more than likely that Alcalá will keep up with the tradition in 2012.
